Polarized Sun Glasses

What Are Polarized Sun Glasses?

For many years now people that fish or ski have been using the wonders of polarized sun glasses. Basically anyone in a glare situation will probably benefit from polarized sun glasses. When you are fishing there is the constant glare from the water and when you are skiing there is the even more potent glare from the snow. In some cases, like when you are skiing, you do not realize the damage that is being done until you get inside somewhere and your eyes have to adjust.

In some cases it can be painful and it is highly recommended that if you are going to spend a lot of time in a snow or water situation that you be sure to wear polarized sun glasses for your own protection.  Too much exposure to this glare without polarized sun glasses can cause serious damage to the eyes that can be irreparable.

Have you ever been out in the sun, sometimes playing in the snow all day or something like that, and then come into the house only to be greeted by painful eyes and bright blue spots in your vision?  If you do that often enough then you will damage your eyes.  Your best bet is polarized sun glasses to protect your eyes.  But how do polarized sun glasses work?

When the sun glares into your eyes off of water or snow it does so because of the reflection from the water or snow.  For the most part this reflection is horizontally polarized.  That means that the rays of light reflect in a horizontal manner when they hit your eyes.  A pair of polarized sun glasses are polarized in a vertical manner to help offset these strong reflections and glares.  They are highly recommended but, like everything else in the world, there are the drawbacks.

The Other Side of the Pole

Many people maintain that too many athletes and other people put their trust in polarized sun glasses and that polarized sun glasses are simply not powerful enough to really be effective against these strong sun reflections.  It will be something that is debated for a very long time but for now it does not hurt to use polarized sun glasses as long as you remember the main rule of never looking directly into the sun.

Another downfall to polarized sun glasses is that sometimes they prevent you from being able to see the LCD display on your car dashboard or any other LCD display you may be looking at.  It seems odd but sometimes the polarization can interfere with the LCD enough where it blocks your view.  So be careful if you use your sun glasses in your car.

  • Hard lenses — removal
In general, removal is easier than insertion. Lenses are removed, not with the fingers but with the lid margins. When you are wearing lenses your lids, on closing, slip easily over the lens to be in front of it. Indeed, for most of the time your upper lids will be covering the upper part of [...]
  • Hard Lenses – insertion
The majority of patients have become wholly relaxed about putting on and removing lenses by the time they attend for the first follow-up appointment. Many, at that stage, are able to treat the matter as a joke and refer to their former anxieties with amusement or mild embarrassment. A minority, however, are still having some [...]
  • Soft lenses — insertion
Although soft lenses are considerably larger than hard lenses they are almost as easy to insert. If you can hold your lids wide enough apart, you can use the method described above for the insertion of hard lenses and you will find that the lens nestles on to your cornea with no trouble at all [...]
  • Soft lenses — removal
This is very easy. Start by getting accustomed to touching the front of the lens while it is on your eye, and do this several times until you have overcome your nervousness. The lens acts as a kind of cushion so you will feel practically nothing. It is important, when you are doing this, not [...]
  • Problems of post-cataract patients
Sometimes the people who need contact lenses most are those who may have the greatest difficulty in inserting and removing them. This seems a good place to deal with some of the problems such people have in inserting lenses, and how these may be relieved. In the first place, a patient who has had a [...]
